Michael Flynn back in dirty business
After benefiting from Trump’s Justice Department, former National Security Adviser’s a featured guest for Trump hotel customer. On Thursday, Phyllis Schlafly’s Eagle Council announced former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn will present one of the group’s top honors at its annual gathering, taking place in September at the Trump Hotel D.C.
Despite pleading guilty—twice—to lying to FBI agents, on June 24 an appeals court ordered charges against Flynn be thrown out after President Donald J. Trump’s Justice Department moved to drop the case.
That motion came after Trump tweeted repeated criticism of the department’s handling of Flynn’s case repeatedly on Twitter and posted that he was “strongly considering a full pardon.”
The conference fee is $500 a person and it does not include hotel rooms, which are available at an additional but discounted rate, according to eventbrite.com.
The president, of course, still owns his D.C. hotel and can profit from people paying to hear from this beneficiary of his administration.
This March, 1100 Pennsylvania reported that the Eagle Council had booked the Trump Hotel D.C. for this event; Flynn’s participation is new information, first shared by ACLU researcher Brian Tashman.
Flynn has a couple earlier notable connections to the Trump Hotel D.C. During inaugural festivities, the then-incoming National Security Adviser attended a breakfast meeting with Turkey’s foreign minister, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, and then-House Intelligence Committee Chair Devin Nunes (R-CA).
Special council Robert Mueller later investigated that gathering.
And in May 2017, a group chaired by the founder of a company that once paid Flynn $500,000 for “lobbying work that may have benefited the Turkish government,” held a conference on U.S.-Turkish relations at the hotel, as Marilyn Geewax and Jackie Northam reported for NPR.
The Phyllis Schlafly Eagles, named after the anti-Equal Rights Amendment crusader who founded the group, launched in 1972. The council is the Eagles’ annual training conference. Last year that gathering was held in St. Louis and bestowed an award on Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán (in absentia).
In 2018, Flynn received the same award he’ll now be presenting.
